While some ethnic media have voiced strong negative reactions to the passage of Arizona’s anti-immigrant law, including Spanish-language and African American media, the Russian-American media have a different viewpoint. A news analysis published in Panorama, a Russian-language magazine, defends SB 1070. The bill, signed into law in April, makes it a crime to be undocumented. Using the reasoning that illegal immigrants are breaking the law, author Anatolii Yarkho writes that protests against the law are equivalent to demanding that criminals be released. He also dismisses international criticism of the law, calling it interventionism, and rejects analogies comparing the law to the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany.
